Kerry and Milagros Dougan met at the Anija Education Center in Jarabacoa in 1993, when Milagros was teaching there and Kerry came for a two week mission trip. They were married one year later in the States before returning to the Dominican Republic after a year of marriage, bringing their newborn daughter Sarah. Kerry works as an assistant principal in charge of discipline, and Milagros teaches fourth grade. He and Milagros introduced the AWANA Bible Club ministries to Kids Alive in the DR and now they both oversee AWANA in our ANIJA programs and throughout the entire country.
Kerry hails from a Christian family in Madison, Indiana and has been involved with Prison Fellowship and other Christian ministries. He studied chemical engineering at Purdue University and worked for Bethlehem Steel. Milagros was born in San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic. She became a Christian at the age of 12 and, upon finishing high school, studied three years in the seminary Instituto Bíblico el Caribe. She also studied education in La Universidad Cathólico Santo Domingo and was the first teacher for Kids Alive’s ANIJA center. Kerry and Milagros have three children: Sarah, Oliver and Alina.
Some of the Dougans' hobbies include reading, working Sudoku puzzles, and watching movies. Kerry also does a little writing, primarily on the topic of biblical prophecy. They are very active in their local church, the Iglesia Nueva Vida. They teach Sunday school, direct the worship team, preach, and work with the youth, and are also thinking of starting to work more with the children's ministry in the church.
